Changing It Up

Our days have gotten a little, well, boring around here. Ewan seems to be a bit tired of our same old routine and needs a little more of something. A little more stimulation. A few more surprises. A couple new novel situations to explore and discover.

For me, that’s a new challenge. For so long, it seems, my little one has been content to roam around the house; emptying cabinets, scattering toys, reading books, and participating in the daily chores. He’s changing, and my parenting strategy must follow suit.

Starting today, I’ve issued myself a bit of challenge. Instead of falling into the same routine each weekday, I’m going to try to find one extraordinary thing to do. It can be an outing, an activity in our home, just so long as it is something out of the ordinary, something that isn’t usually a part of our everyday. I think it will be good for both of us.

Today, we played with a big bin of water.

He thought this was all very serious business.

I gave him measuring cups, bowls, ladles, spoons, pitchers and buckets. All kinds of different tools for him to use as he explored.

He spent a good 45 minutes quietly engaged with the water. We would have, likely, gone on longer except he decided that he wanted to explore turning the big bin over. I’m totally game for making a mess and having a good time, but that was a little too far.

It was fun, we both had a good time, and it is great to have another tool in my bag of tricks for days like today. Rainy inside days that need just a little something extra to make it through.

If you’re looking for a little extra inspiration, a little extra oomph to fill your days with your own little ones, keep coming by. I promise I’ll share some of what we do, so long as you share some of your own. Tell me, what are some of the things that you keep in your bag of tricks?

Your little guy is so cute! There’s nothing better than a baby tummy! My kids LOVE playing with water, still at 3, 5, 7, and 12! When everyone starts getting tired and cranky, I break out the water play and it makes everything all better!
