Perpetual Journal

I’d seen the idea in a variety of places (oh, thank you, pinterest) and decided that this year was the year to give it a go.

Each day. One card. A sentence or two about the day. Same cards year after year. Simple. Easy.

I already do so much documenting. Here on the blog. Through the copious quantity of photos that I take. But something about this line-a-day perpetual journal is different. Something about it feels so much more real and concrete. More personal.

While this year is the least rewarding, I imagine that next year and in the years that follow adding to the journal will be such a treat. Getting a chance to not only document a short line about the day, but also having the chance, at a quick glance, to see what I had been doing in years past.

Right now it is just me and a small stack of index cards. I’d like to pretty it up soon, like they showed over on design sponge:

And, actually, I’d really like to get Ewan in on the daily journal action. I’m just not quite sure how to include him yet… Any ideas?

I do this too! I started about a year ago, I think? Or is it two now? It is a treat to see what we were doing this time last year. Especially when the note is about something my toddler was really into or had just done for the first time. Helps me see how quickly he’s changing. I am not involving him yet, but I’ll be interested hearing how you do so. I usually do it when my son’s not around (so I can write an entire coherent sentence, you know!) but if he were near, you could ask him what he thinks you could write that day. From time to time I read him last year’s statement, if he’ll get a kick out of it.

You’re getting me thinking. I may start a habit of going around the table at dinner and have everyone say one thing they’re thankful for that day. Not quite the same, but a valuable habit nonetheless.
